Wine tasting is very subjective, and the best way to find out what you like is to keep tasting! However, here are some of Kelly's favorite wines. Give them a try and see what you think:
New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs: I simply love these for their bracing acidity, herby/citrusy quality, and for the fantastic way they pair with food. Here are some of my favorite producers:
- Kim Crawford
- Matua Valley
- Jackson Estate
- Cloudy Bay
California Zinfandels: Red Zinfandel is not for the faint of heart! It's big, bold, peppery and spicy, with a high alcohol content. But it goes so well with grilled meats, as well as Thanksgiving turkey. Just remember the letter "R" when shopping for red Zins:
- Ravenswood
- Ridge
- Renwood
- Rosenblum
Acacia Pinot Noir from the Carneros region in California has been one of my favorite Pinots ever since we had it on the patio at Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley a few years ago. It's a fruit forward Pinot with red berries and soft tannins--very easy drinking.
Chateau St. Michelle Merlot is elegant and refined, made in the Bordeaux style, with restrained fruit. A very, very good Merlot.
2005 Pink Knot Rosé has everything that a dry rosé should--fresh berry flavor, good acidity, and no alcohol burn or aftertaste. This wine comes from McLaren Vale, Australia, and it's the perfect choice to take on a picnic, or to enjoy on your deck.
Marques de Caceres makes a fantastic Rioja. Made from primarily Tempranillo grapes, it also has some Granciano and Mazuelo. It's a hearty red with a good backbone and also a decent amount of fruit. Try it with some steaks on the grill.
Bonny Doon Muscat Vin de Glaciere from California is a terrific dessert wine made from the Muscat grape. It has that "grapey" Muscat flavor and aroma, but the sweet flavor is balanced by wonderful acidity that keeps the wine from becoming cloying.
Gazela Vinho Verde NV is a fun, fizzy, non-cerebral white wine from Portugal that is perfect as an apertif or for enjoying on the patio in the summer. Zingy acidity, with green apple and lemon flavors. A great light-bodied wine to have around in the spring and summer.
Folie a Deux Menage a Trois Rouge is a delicious blend of Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet. Soft tannins and plummy fruit. A fun red from California with an interesting name.
Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc is stellar California sparkling wine. Schramsberg bubblies were served for state dinners since Nixon's term and up to and including Clinton's term. Some yeasty flavors, but also some crisp apple, with a medium finish and lots of small bubbles. Perfect for a special occasion when you want to serve a domestic sparkling wine.
